Laser Tattoo Removal

At Beacon Dermatology, we understand that tattoos can be a permanent reminder of decisions made in the past. Whether you find your tattoo doesn’t represent your aesthetic ideal, changes to your skin has changed that has a result to change the appearance of your tattoo, desire to lighten your tattoo for a future tattoo, or simply wanting a clean canvas, our team is here to help you achieve the results you desire.

What is tattoo and pigment removal?

A Q-switched (Q-switched Nd:YAG 1064nm/532nm) laser pulses high power laser beams with such precision that they don’t have any significant thermal interaction with surrounding tissues. This means that it produces minimal damage to surrounding tissues internally and targets only the tattoo ink pigments. An added benefit of this is a quicker and less complicated healing time.

The Q-Switched laser has been determined as a gold standard for tattoo removal. It works by producing extremely short pulses of high energy light. The light is then absorbed by the particles of the tattoo pigment but doesn’t get absorbed by the surrounding skin. The tattoo pigment then heats up and starts to break down into small particles. A Q-Switched laser may also be used to treat pigmented lesions including age spots, freckles, sunspots and some birthmarks, it targets the melanin in the superficial layer of your skin.

What tattoo colors can be treated?

The general rule of thumb is the darker the color, the more effective for the laser energy to absorb into the tattoo pigment with resulting removal. The most effective colors for laser tattoo removal are black, blue, dark blue, dark green, brown, red, purple, orange. Difficult colors include tan, yellow, bright green, sky blue, and white.

Is laser tattoo removal painful?

The level of pain can vary from person to person. Most individuals describe the sensation as similar to the feeling of a rubber band snapping against the skin. The pain is typically manageable, but some people may opt for numbing creams or local anesthesia.

When will I see results? How long do they last?

The sessions are typically spaced six to eight weeks apart, which allows your skin to process and heal from the treatment. Many people start to see their ink fade slightly after each subsequent session and greater improvement after three appointments. Given six to eight weeks between each session, you can expect the results to start showing a few months after the process starts.
